How is Christian Counseling different from Biblical Counseling? What is wrong with
Psychology?

On this week’s episode, Jeff Christianson helps us understand the difference between Christian Counseling and Biblical Counseling. Pastor Jeff helps us see that we must hold fast to the word of God and guard against false teaching. Just because someone is a Christian does not mean they are a Biblical Counselor. The debate between Christian Counseling and Biblical Counseling has been at least a fifty-year debate. Psychology is a whole philosophy of life and has crept into the Christian Church, Culture, and our Nation. Christian Counselors try to integrate the Bible with Psychology, while Biblical Counselors have the conviction that the word of God is sufficient and has everything we need to meet people’s needs in counseling. The Bible is either sufficient or it is not. It is important that we reprove, rebuke, and warn people concerning what the word of God says about opposing views such as psychology. “Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons” (1 Tim. 4:1). As Christians, we are called to contend earnestly for the faith (Jude 1:3). It is not a matter of attacking or condemning people who disagree, but we must be able to divide truth from error and psychology is heretical. “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not accord to Christ.” (Col. 2:8).

Pastor Jeff helps us see the biggest contrasts between Christian Counseling and Biblical Counseling. When Christian Counselors push for integration of the Bible and Psychology what they are doing is saying the Bible is not enough. However, God has given us sufficient answers
and help from His Word. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Biblical Counselors acknowledge the biblical truth that people are not just a body, but a body, soul, and spirit. We must be ready to apologetically give an answer concerning the sufficiency of scripture.
