In this lesson with 8-year-old Clara on Bohm’s “Gavotte,” we dive into music-making—not just notes. I encourage Clara to imagine herself as an orchestra conductor, thinking about who’s “playing” in each phrase and really leading the music. There’s a lot of hands-on experimenting with the pedal—trying out different ways to use it, listening closely to stay clear or add warmth, and figuring out what sounds best in each spot.

We spend time on bringing out the melody, making sure it sings over the left hand, and stopping to adjust if it gets lost. Sometimes, I’ll ask Clara to try a phrase a new way, listen carefully, or even sing along to feel the music’s shape.
