THE BRIGHT AND DARK WORLD OF BEFORE I WAKE
Mike Flanangan, the director of Absentia and Oculus, his most well known work most likely being the sequel to the shining, 2019s Doctor Sleep, was set to direct Somnia, a film he co wrote with Jeff Howard. Filming began in 2013 and was completed the same year- with May 2015 set as the release date.
It was not until 2018 the film would finally be released theatrically and be available on Netflix. Finally bringing what is now known as Before I Wake to North American audiences, very much against the wishes of Flanagan who wanted to keep the title Somnia. The film received mostly favorable reviews with some attacks on the writing and characters. With music by the mighty Danny Elfman and the Newton Brothers.
Starring Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane of genre Mist fame and in one of my guilty pleasures, the Punisher 2004, Jacob Tremblay, Anabeth Gish of genre X-files fame, and Dash Mihok.
While marketed and defined as a horror, this film sits more in a fantastical fantasy horror type setting.
