A normal cable looks very different and not at all pretty from the wrong side. But when you knit the cable using ribbing instead of stockinette stitch (plain knitting), it will look the same from both sides. Then it doesn't matter if your scarf or blanket turns so the reverse side shows.

Most of the time the space between cables is purl stitches. As we know, it looks different on the other side. But then you use garter stitch for those parts between cables, it looks the same from both sides.
