In this post we are learn about the Kaduthuruthy Mahadeva Temple.

The kaduthuruthy temple Mahadeva Temple is located 25 kilometers north of Kottayam city in Kerala, and is about 14 kilometers from the Vaikom Mahadeva Temple.

The deity here is called Kaduthruthi Mahadeva. Situated on a hillock, the sanctum sanctorum of this temple has a very small Shivalinga, measuring three inches in size, facing east. Of the three Shivalingas brought by the demon Karan, the Shivalinga installed in this temple is the smallest. However, the deity here, along with the goddess, is a deity of grace.

A demon named Kara, who received Shaiva Vidya teachings from Malyava, went to Chidambaram and performed severe penance to attain salvation. Pleased with his penance, Lord Shiva gave him three Shivalingas and said, ‘If you worship these three Shivalingas, you will attain salvation.’ Kara went south with the three Shivalingas. Lord Shiva also sent the tiger-footed sage Vyagrapadar to follow him.

Carrying one Shivalinga in his right hand, another in his left hand, and the third in his mouth, the demon placed the Shivalinga in his right hand somewhere to rest for a while due to the fatigue of the journey. After some time, he tried to pick up the Shivalinga that he had put down. But he could not.

Then he requested Vyagrapadar, who had arrived there, to worship and worship that Shivalinga. Vyagrapadar, who had carried it, stayed at that place and worshipped the Shivalinga for a long time.

The demon continued his journey with the remaining two Shivalingas. When he reached a place called EttuManur, he installed the Shivalinga in his left hand facing west and worshipped it. Then he placed the Shivalinga, which he carried in his mouth, facing east at a place called kaduthuruthy and worshipped it. Through this, he attained salvation.

The place got the name "kaduthuruthy" because the demon bit it in the mouth and carried it away and consecrated it. The Pargava Puranam, which tells the history of this temple, says that the Lord here was called 'Kaduthuruthi Mahadeva'.

In most Shiva temples in Kerala, only Lord Shiva is present at the main shrine. Ambal is not present. However, it is considered unique that Lord Shiva is present as a couple with Ambal as the Anugraha Murthy at the main shrine of the kaduthuruthy Mahadeva temple.

In the southern part of the Kaduthuruthi Mahadeva temple complex, there is the Ettumanur Mahadeva shrine and in the northern part, there is the Vaikom Mahadeva shrine.

கேரள மாநிலம் கோட்டயம் நகரில் இருந்து வடக்கே 25 கிலோமீட்டர் தொலைவில் கடுத்துருத்தி மகாதேவர் கோவில் அமைந்திருக்கிறது, இக்கோவில் வைக்கம் மகாதேவர் ஆலயத்தில் இருந்து சுமார் 14 கிலோமீட்டர் தொலைவில் அமைந்துள்ளது.

இங்கிருக்கும் இறைவன் கடுத்துருத்தி மகாதேவர் என அழைக்கப்படுகிறார். மலைக்குன்று ஒன்றின் மீது அமைந்திருக்கும் இந்த ஆலய கருவறையில், மூன்று அங்குலம் அளவு கொண்ட மிகச் சிறிய சிவலிங்கம் கிழக்கு நோக்கிய நிலையில் இருக்கிறது. அசுரன் கரன் கொண்டு வந்த மூன்று சிவலிங்கங்களுள் இக்கோவிலில் நிறுவப்பட்டிருக்கும் சிவலிங்கமே மிகச் சிறியது. இருப் பினும், இங்கிருக்கும் இறைவன் இறைவியுடன் இணைந்து அனுக்கிரக மூர்த்தியாகக் அருள்பாளிக்கிறார்.

இத்தலம் இங்கு அமைந்த புராண வரலாற்றை இனி காணலாம்.

கரன் எனும் அசுரனுக்கு மறுபிறவி இல்லாமல், முக்தி தந்த திருக் கோவிலாக கடுத்துருத்தி மகாதேவர் ஆலயம் திகழ்கிறது.

கராசுரன் வாயில் கடித்து இருத்தி சென்று பிரதிஷ்டை செய்ததால் இத்தலம்"கடித்துருத்தி' என்ற பெயர் பெற்றது. இதனால் இங்கிருக்கும் இறைவன், ‘கடுத்துருத்தி மகாதேவர்’ என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டதாக இந்த ஆலயத்தின் வரலாற்றை தெரிவிக்கும் பார்க்கவ புராணம் கூறுகிறது.
