While in Tbilisi, we had the privilege of visiting the Zurab Tsereteli Museum of Modern Art. Although it was officially a day off for the museum, the curator kindly let us in after learning we were only in town for one day. Zurab Tsereteli (1934–2025) was a Georgian-born artist renowned for his monumental sculptures and vivid murals. Born in Tbilisi, he studied at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts and began his career as a muralist. His bold, large-scale works—such as the Peter the Great Statue in Moscow and Tear of Grief in New Jersey—earned both acclaim and controversy. Tsereteli served as President of the Russian Academy of Arts from 1997 until his death. Deeply influenced by Georgian traditions and Soviet aesthetics, he left a global legacy of public art. He passed away in Moscow at age 91 and was buried in Tbilisi While in Tbilisi, we had the privilege of visiting the Zurab Tsereteli Museum of Modern Art.
