In July 2024 we had a one-week holiday in Ammoudia, Epirus, Greece.
Follow our day to day adventours in the small village Ammoudia, as well as the trips to Parga.
Ammoudia is a coastal village near Parga, situated along the Ionian Sea. It boasts a large sandy beach that runs parallel to the village and is fed by the waters of the Acheron River. The beach, with its shallow waters, is ideal for families with young children and offers a range of sea sports activities.

In Greek mythology, Acheron, was a key river of the Underworld, where the dead were ferried by Charon. According to legend, Acheron was once a son of Helios, transformed into the river after aiding the Titans. The river is also mentioned by Homer as the route Odysseus took to the Underworld, starting from Ammoudia's bay.

Achilles' mother, Thetis, tried to make her infant son immortal by dipping him into the River Acheron (also known as Styx ). She held him by his heel, leaving it untouched by the waters. This untouched heel became his only point of vulnerability, giving rise to the phrase "Achilles' heel."

The area around Ammoudia, including the Acheron Delta, is a protected ecological site under the Natura 2000 network, home to rare species of flora and fauna. We were lucky to see so much on this trip.
