In Pakistan, Amid Climate Disaster, IDA Works To Turn Despair Into Hope

In 2022, a climate disaster hit Pakistan as devastating floods displaced millions of people, damaged some 2 million homes and left 70 percent of the country under water for weeks. Decades of development gains were reversed in an instant. World Bank practice manager Abed Khalil felt hopeless while watching the tragedy unfold. But he watched despair turn to hope as the World Bank IDA’s US$2 billion for relief and reconstruction efforts helped 300,000 farmers plant new crops, trained women to participate in reconstruction, rebuilt 70 kilometers of roads and constructed 500,000 homes.
