How To Refurb Alloy Wheels With Powder Coating

In this video, Alan took a trip out to SKS to see how to refurb an alloy wheel he had kerbed on the AMDetails fiesta. We take a behind the scenes look at the machines involved at SKS when refurbing an Alloy wheel and get a general overview of How to refurb an alloy wheel using powder coat and paint.

The Alloy wheel goes through many stages when at SKS based in Fogwatt just outside of Elgin, Moray. To begin an alloy refurb, you first need to prepare the alloy for the repair.

The first stages are to use a stripping tank to start removing your alloy wheels old paint and primer. The refurb then moves on to the next step which is to steam wash your alloy wheel. Followed by a media blast to remove any old corrosion from the wheel. It also prepares the alloy perfectly for primer and paint.

The next step in refurbing an alloy wheel is damage repair. The AMDetails alloy wheel only had a light kerbing, and it was easily fixed with a simple sanding by hand machine. From here you then have the primer, paint and lacquer stages which all make up the alloy refurb process.

Do to requiring a colour match the AMDetails Fiesta's alloy wheel refurb consisted of, Powdercoat primer, painted colour match then lacquer. We found it super interesting on how the poweder coating process actually worked with the possotive and negativly charged items.

This video hopefully gives you a general overview of getting your alloy wheel refurbed but also on how SKS like to carry out their work.
