A bold and elegant late Victorian 14k rose gold statement ring, bezel-set with a large natural dendritic agate that's been cut flat, polished, and contoured with beveled corners. The stone was chosen for its unusual inclusions (present due to iron and manganese in the stone), which look as if natural tufts of moss have been preserved inside the transluscent milky bluish-gray agate. When viewed in person, the stone appears mysterious, wintry, and haunting. The ring is further accentuated with handsome quadfurcated shoulders, which are reticulated, tapered, and engraved with late Victorian eastlake style motifs.
English and Scottish jewelers first came to prize moss agates as a gem-grade stone in the early 19th century, but it is in the late Victorian era that these pieces became immensely popular. As a protest against industrialization, urbanization, and machine production, the Victorian social-cultural atmosphere increasingly turned towards the naturalistic for inspiration and meaning. From the Luddites to the Aesthetic movement, the late Victorian sensibility was perfectly intune with design elements borrowed from nature, and this ring, with its 'nature embalmed' mystique, would have resonated well with Victorians.

Width of shank: 5.4 - 5.5 mm
Thickness of shank: 0.8 - 1 mm
Condition: the main flaw to take note of is the chip to the underside corner of the agate (not visible from the front); I have asked my jeweler to fill in this chip with jeweler's epoxy to prevent future damage to the stone. See the last photo included in this listing for more details.
Other flaws are age-related blemishes: general surface wear to the gold (some shallow nibbles and scratches here and there). The surface of the agate has some very light scratches, when examined at a slant against the light. This ring has been sized down in the past; the back of the shank has a very subtle joint line. There is some dirt / grime to the back of the ring face.
Please examine all pictures carefully, as they are part of the condition report. Please note that all antique objects, due to their age, can be well-worn, well-loved, and somewhat imperfect. It is my goal to catalogue these imperfections as carefully as possible. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me.
