Walking Through the Coddu Ecchju Tomb | Nuragic Monument Exploration

Join me as we explore the Coddu Ecchju Tomb, part of the ancient Nuragic village of La Prisgiona in Sardinia. This incredible collective tomb was built in two phases, with its origins tracing back to the pre-Nuragic period (2100-1800 BC). The tomb later received a monumental facelift between 1800 and 1600 BC, with the addition of the iconic semicircular façade made of vertical slabs.

The central stele, standing over 4 meters tall, symbolizes the gate to the afterlife. There's even a small hatch at its base, where funerary offerings were once delivered. As we walk through the ceremonial area, known as the exedra, you'll see the space where communal rituals were held. Pottery fragments found here suggest the community gathered for meals, likely tied to burials or ancestor worship.

Inside the tomb’s funerary corridor, the deceased—regardless of gender, age, or status—were laid to rest by lifting a slab or wooden element of the roof. The tomb was once protected by a large tumulus of earth and rubble, which would have made this monument visible from afar.
