HO Scale: Union Pacific "Big Boy"

This video turned out to be twice as long as I had thought. After I filmed it on the 29th and had it all edited together by Friday the 5th, I was like... I want more. So I filmed more yesterday out at the club and literally doubled the length... but hey, it's a big locomotive so a big video is appropriate! Oh, and I should also note, the freight train is actually Dad's. I don't have a 1940s-1950s era train. I had 40 cars behind her and with the extra weight he's put into these cars, it's more like it's pulling 60-70 cars. But she did just fine pulling the load...

Anyway, I always thought me ever getting an Athearn Genesis Big Boy was a pipe dream, then towards the end of last year, one of our newer (at the time) club members said he'd sell me his (for an EXTREMELY affordable price). From what he said, it was just sitting in a display case, not really doing anyone any good and he wanted to see it go to someone who would use and appreciate it, and to get sound installed.

With me being the resident UP fan of the club, and having the 844 and 3985, and with the return of the 4014, the timing was just right. I had already gotten a heavy steam decoder that I was going to put in my 3985, but with me getting the 4001, I decided to install it in that unit instead. I also got it with the intention of changing it to the 4014. That will of course require a renumber, a conversion to oil, and I'll need to "clean up" a lot of the factory weathering. But that will all come down the road sometime. For now, it's staying as is.

Getting sound installed was a bit harder than expected as this unit was not equipped for anything sound related... and I'm still learning this stuff. I was having issues with this one and ended up handing it over to my buddy Shane (thebrakaman17) who was able to sort it out, basically coming down to needing an entirely different kind of speaker than what I had, something called a Sugar Cube speaker.

Shane does do installs as a side job and he's REALLY good. I would gladly recommend him if you have something you need done. Below are a couple videos Shane posted of his time with this unit.
