I recorded this version because I feel that The Fields of Athenry is a poignant tale, the minor chords and melody align well with the storyline.

The tragedy of the Irish famine in the 1840s is the backdrop for the love story between the song's characters, Micheal and Mary who lived in Athenry, County Galway. Desperation and starvation drove Micheal to steal food from a wealthy landlord, Charles Trevelyn. Micheal is charged with the crime and sentenced to transportation to Botany Bay never to return to Ireland.

The events in the story are true for so many lost souls who were scattered across the globe during those dark times. This song speaks for every individual who suffered the same fate.
