While the cash envelope system is an effective tool to help you curb those reckless spending tendencies, its biggest drawback is that you physically have to sort your cash in envelopes and carry them around whenever you head out.

By using an envelope budgeting app, it relieves you of the burden of manually allocating cash in different piles. After all, you don’t normally get your income in cash anyway, it’s usually a direct deposit (or check deposit) into your banking account tied to a debit card.

Basic budgeting programs like YNAB and EveryDollar kind of work like an envelope system. They keep track of how much money is in your bank account, and you tell which categories get allocated. However, all these Apps cost money. At another $10/mo, I am sure you can see why I’m not the biggest fan of those.

A little bit less cost are Emma and Mvelopes at $6/mo, and GoodBudget at $7/mo. Mint is at least free, and usually comes highly recommended.

However, I have tried them all in the past, and none of them are particularly freelancer friendly. They want you to allocate the months bills before you make the money, so it’s super hard to do when you have no idea how much you're actually going to make.



How I manage my money, is that I use a split system between real envelopes and digital envelopes. I keep it all organized with a Google Sheets Spreadsheet, where I manually make the entries and keep track of everything myself. It takes about an hour per week, but nothing gets past me.

I do still have actual envelopes filled with cash for anything that does not accept a credit card. When a bill is due that requires me to hand over actual money (my son's karate), or directly withdraw from a bank account (gym membership), then I am sure to take the money out of the envelope and deposit into the bank for the following week before anything is due.

Then, I use one business and one personal card to charge absolutely everything else, and collect the cash back, between $75 and $150/month. Every week or two, I simply pay it off. This way I have the freedom of not needing cash in the bank at all times, and I make regular payments so it never gets out of hand. If I dont have money coming in, I simply stop spending it.
