In 1904 the Edison Bell patents expired and with the advent of gold moulded 2-minute cylinders smaller companies emerged, such as Sterling and Clarion Records. Sir Louis Saul Sterling [1879-1958] was an American business man, recording pioneer, philanthropist, much-loved socialite and knighted book collector, who moved to England to establish in 1905 the Sterling Record Company, which was bought, within a few months, by the Russell Hunting Record Company. Russell Dinsmore Hunting [1864-1943] was an American comic entertainer, the intellectual father of the Irish character Michael Casey, "the most popular pre-1900 recording artist", and a recording director. Sterling records were of superior quality and sold well in the beginning. 1906 "Smithurst's System" special cylinders were almost ½" longer and could store 10% more music than Edison's, but were 25% more expensive. After only 3½ years Sterling Co. folded in 1908.
My cylinder No. 755, titled "The Old Clown", sung by Fred Vernon was released in March 1907, the same year the composer of the song, George Everard died. Fred Vernon was one of many aliases Harry Fay [1878-1956] used in order to mark the different categories of his impressive repertoire. Alone the Zonophone catalog for 1913/14 lists over 50 of his records. During WWI Harry had a huge hit with "It's A Long Way To Tipperary". I did not find a single reference for the existence of my cylinder 755, nor for the lyrics of this song. The cylinder's cosmetic and acoustic condition is mint, but it is still waiting for its transcription. The cylinder is for sale.
