The Chera Empire, one of the ancient Tamil dynasties alongside the Cholas and Pandyas, thrived in South India from around 300 BCE to the 12th century CE. Centered in present-day Kerala and parts of western Tamil Nadu, the Cheras played a key role in Indian Ocean trade, connecting the Roman Empire, Arabia, and Southeast Asia. They were known for their spice exports, especially black pepper, and their vibrant port cities like Muziris. The Chera rulers promoted Tamil literature, Sangam poetry, and Hinduism while also fostering religious diversity including Jainism and early Christianity. Their emblem, the bow and arrow, symbolized valor and military prowess. Monumental inscriptions, coins, and references in Tamil epics reveal a prosperous, multicultural society. The Cheras left a legacy of trade, cultural exchange, and political influence across southern India and beyond.
