EN - In the flower-decorated Philips Recreation Building in Eindhoven, the founder of the Philips group, Dr. Anton Philips, is addressed on the occasion of his 75th birthday by the mayor of Eindhoven, who informs him that a statue of him will be erected. Philips gives a short speech of thanks. Anton Philips was born as the son of Frederik Philips and Maria Heyligers in a family where he was the eighth of nine children. At the initiative of his father, he moved to Amsterdam at the age of 17 to continue his studies at the Openbare Handelsschool. At the age of twenty, Philips returned to Eindhoven, where his father and brother Gerard had founded a light bulb factory. Anton was able to start working as a salesman. The young company mainly had to compete with large German companies such as AEG and Siemens & Halske. Anton Philips managed to win many orders for the factory, which was partly responsible for growing rapidly. In 2021, Philips achieved a total turnover of 17.2 billion euros. The company employed around 80,000 people in 2021.

Philips spreekt een korte dankrede. Anton Philips werd geboren als de zoon van Frederik Philips en Maria Heyligers in een gezin waar hij de achtste van negen kinderen was. Op initiatief van zijn vader verhuisde hij op 17-jarige leeftijd naar Amsterdam om daar verder te studeren aan de Openbare Handelsschool. Op twintigjarig leeftijd keerde Philips naar Eindhoven terug, waar zijn vader en broer Gerard een gloeilampfabriekje hadden opgericht. Anton kon aan de slag als verkoper. Het jonge bedrijf moest vooral de concurrentie aangaan met grote Duitse bedrijven als AEG en Siemens & Halske. Anton Philips wist menig order voor de fabriek in de wacht te slepen die mede daardoor hard groeide. In 2021 realiseerde Philips een totale omzet van 17,2 miljard euro. Bij het bedrijf werkten in 2021 zo'n 80.000 mensen.
