Veronica Harwood-Stevenson founded Humble Bee Bio, a deep-tech company with global recognition. It led to her being named in the Top 5 hottest biotech start-ups in NZ in 2021.

In this episode of Imagine This, Veronica tells us about her mission to create a bioplastic from bee DNA, her self-worth as an entrepreneur and long-term vision versus short-term timeframes.

Originally learning about a damaging class of hazardous chemicals while studying reproductive biology at university, Veronica began to look for something non-toxic, something that existed in nature.

She stumbled across the answer in a science journal. She read about the properties a native bee produces for nest building and thought it might make a good bioplastic to replace some regular plastic in textile, medical devices and construction products.

“Many people think that honeybees and bumblebees are the only bees, but solitary bees are actually the most abundant bees in the world.

“This particular species that we that we identified creates a plastic to line its nest, and that plastic has some of the same performance attributes of some of the hazardous chemicals we need to replace.”
