On the initiative of the European People’s Party (EPP) Group, the European Parliament’s Plenary discussed Turkey’s illegal activities in the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly the drilling operations west of Cyprus and the launch of a second drilling operation northeast of Cyprus within Cypriot territorial water. The EPP Group stands firmly behind the Republic of Cyprus and calls on Ankara to end these illegal activities in the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus. The EU’s High Representative updated MEPs on the situation and the framework for restrictive measures agreed on Monday (11 November) by foreign ministers.

The framework will make it possible to sanction individuals or entities responsible for or involved in unauthorised drilling activities of hydrocarbons in the Eastern Mediterranean. The sanctions will consist of a travel ban to the EU and the freezing of assets. In addition, EU persons and entities will be forbidden from making funds available to those listed.
