The Golden Age of Gospel Choirs The 1960's. The Voices of Tabernacle, Prayer Tabernacle, & Rev. Charles A. Craig, Jr. are part of the gospel legacy that is Detroit. The Voices of Tabernacle are the pride of Detroit, and during the early rise of the golden gospel era, they were supreme innovators. Often imitated, but never fully duplicated; with the style and religious fervor of this choir from Prayer Tabernacle. They gave us all the excitement and dramatic sounds that could be possibly made by any voice, or group of voices. Their musical staff included Herbert "PeeWee" Pickard on piano, and the organist was the legendary Alfred Bolden, and several choir directors including Alonozo Atkins. Rev. Charles A. Craig, Jr. was their mentor and leader, and inspired this majestic choir to their glorious eminence.
