JAX SongStage Showcase is the place to experience excellent Singer Songwriters performing their original tunes. Here you'll find talent that is established, published, and recorded as well as rising stars ready to make a difference in the world.
Tonight, JAX SONGSTAGE with Kayla Kraemer is proud to feature touring singer songwriter Matt Axton along with 3 of Matt's favorite Los Angeles based singer songwriters: The Doohickeys (a duo), Gilbert Louie Ray & Kyle Wyman. Matt hails from an incredible lineage of singer songwriters, his father Hoyt Axton wrote "Never Been to Spain" and "Joy To the World" (Jeremiah was a Bullfrog), among many other hits of the era, while his Grandmother, Mae Boren Axton wrote "Heartbreak Hotel" and many more hits for Elvis and other stars of her era.
MATT AXTON: Grown in the mountains of California, Axton’s eclectic style was proudly honed in the heart of the Axton Musical Legacy. Matt honors his family at every show with his own versions of their #1 hits “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Joy to the World” and many more. Matt has recorded with music legends Steve Feroni (Tom Petty), Hal Cragin (Iggy Pop), Durga McBroom (Pink Floyd) and collaborated on projects such as “Abbey Road Reimaged - A Tribute to the Beatles.” Aaron Badgley of Spill Magazine said Matt’s version of “Octopus’s Garden,” “is pure genius and the best cover here. It is just a joy to listen to and really does stand out as an example of keeping the beauty of the song and artists putting their own spin on things.”
Boasting over 300 original songs and some of Los Angeles’ best players behind him, Matt Axton and his band Badmoon will hit the road running in 2024 with multiple West Coast and national tours including the recent “Badmoon Tour” in April 2024. Catch the new single “Badmoon”on all streaming platforms and additional new releases and song collaborations in the coming months. Axton continues to carve his path in the independent Americana scene and proudly celebrates the family tradition of bringing just a little more “Joy to The World!”
THE DOOHICKEYS: The Doohickeys consists of singing and writing duo Haley Spence Brown & Jack Hackett. Haley grew up in Liberty, Missouri, helping train horses and spending time on her grandpa’s cattle farm. Jack grew up in a strict Japanese-American household in Atlanta, Georgia where you had to take your shoes off at the door (everything else was pretty lax).
Although they have country roots, the duo met at USC (FIGHT ON!) while working on the college TV station’s satirical news show. On one fateful evening, Jack was hosting a legendary week-after-Halloween party when Haley heard the sounds of Kenny Chesney echoing through the spookily decorated halls. Right then, they discovered their mutual love of country music. The next day, instead of sitting down to write a sketch, they wrote the song I Wish My Truck Was Bigger.
The pair is now gearing up to release their first record All Hat No Cattle produced by two-time Grammy® nominee, Eric Corne. Their music video for “Rein It In Cowboy” won The American Songwriter music video contest, and their song “All Hat, No Cattle” was honorably mentioned in the May/June edition of the magazine. Their song “This Town Sucks” earned an award for Outstanding Songwriting in the 2023 Great American Song Contest. Their parody of Dolly Parton's "9 to 5," titled "9 to 6," has amassed over 3.5 million views on Instagram and TikTok.
DISCLAIMER: The Doohickeys are not dating. They’re just friends.
GILBERT LOUIE RAY: Hailing from the vibrant neighborhood of Atwater Village, California, Gilbert Louie Ray is an artist whose life has been profoundly shaped by the power of music. From the tender age of childhood, the melodies and harmonies of the Beatles, the soulful grooves of Motown, the rebellious spirit of punk, the storytelling of folk, and the heartfelt twang of bluegrass, all wove their magic into his soul. Yet, it's Americana music that emerged as the canvas for Gilbert's full creative expression.
KYLE WYMAN: Kyle Wyman is lead vocalist of Wyman and the Wolves who sounds like a more soulful version of the legendary 70s and 80s country warbler Gary Stewart and a feel of a tasty blend of Alt-Country, Rock, and Soul. Kyles has the ability to fuse together the multiple genres of Americana in songs that leave you humming their melodies long after hearing them.
