How to Mix Paint for a Spray Gun

Описание к видео How to Mix Paint for a Spray Gun

Learn how to mix latex paint to be used with a spray gun. In this demonstration, we show how a thick latex primer is properly mixed to the right viscosity for an HVLP paint sprayer. The key is to use a viscosity cup and follow the instructions in the manual for your paint sprayer.

The first step to thin a finish is to know the type of finish you are using and what you need to thin it with. I use only water based paints in my woodshop, so I use clean water to thin the paint.

Next, you need to know how thick the finish should be for your paint gun. The thickness of the paint is called viscosity. To measure viscosity, you need a viscosity cup and a timer that measures seconds. The viscosity cup is dipped into the paint and then lifted out while timing how long it takes for the paint to change from a stream of liquid to the start of a drip. Your sprayer manual will tell you what measurement to use for the various types of finish.

For latex paint, I use clean water to mix the paint. Experience will tell you how much water to add, but start with a little at a time and measure the paint thickness with the viscosity cup until you get it to the right consistency as specified in your sprayer owner's manual. Ensure you mix the paint well after each addition of water.

Once you've got the right viscosity, you're ready to fire up the paint sprayer. That raises more questions for many people, so we're producing a series of videos to help you understand the aspects of spraying finishes for woodworking. In upcoming videos, you will learn how to make a compact, knock-down paint spraying booth for a small workshop. You will also learn about the difference in the air cap sets or tips used on paint sprayers. We'll also spray some clear finish to show you how to use an HVLP sprayer for your woodworking.
