This video introduces a new carbonyl functional group – amide. We will be discussing the structure and properties of amides, as well as its similarity and differences compared with amines.

• investigate the structural formulae, properties and functional group including:
– primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols
– aldehydes and ketones (ACSCH127)
– amines and amides
– carboxylic acids
– esters

• explain the properties within and between the homologous series of carboxylic acids amines and amides with reference to the intermolecular and intramolecular bonding present

• investigate the differences between an organic acid and organic base

What are amides? What is the structure of amides? Why are amides neutral? What is the boiling point of amides? What is the solubility of amides? Are amides soluble in water? Why do amides have high boiling points?
