Hello guys
I'm Krishna Agrahari and I'll be discussing about limit test for Iron.

Limit test -
This is a quantitative or semi quantitative test designed for identification and control of impurities present in the compound.

In limit test we compare test sample and standard sample & observe them.

In this video we are going to study about Limit test for Iron.

Principle—
Limit test of Iron is based on the reaction of ferrous ions with thioglycolic acid in presence of ammonia to form ferrous thioglycolate which appears as pale pink to deep reddish purple color in the solution.

Requirements -
Reagents
-Standard Iron solution
For this mix 0.1728 g of ferric ammonium sulphate in 10 ml of 0.1N of Sulfuric acid and add 1000 ml of water into it.
-20% w/v iron free citric acid.
-Thioglycolic acid.
-Ammonia solution.

Apparatus
nessler cylinder
glass rod

Procedure
1. For test sample
Dissolve the specified quantity of the substance in distilled water and transfer it to the Nessler cylinder 'T'
  - Add 2 ml of iron free citric acid & 0.1 ml of thioglycolic acid and mix in cylinder.
Make the solution alkaline with ammonia.
Make up the volume up to 50 ml with water.
Stir with glass rod immediately and keep aside for some time.

2. For standard sample
Place 2 ml of standard iron solution with 20 ml water in nessler cylinder 'S'
Add 2 ml of iron free citric acid & 0.1 ml of thioglycolic acid and mix in cylinder.
Make the solution alkaline with ammonia.
Make up the volume up to 50 ml with water.
stir with glass rod and keep aside for some time.

Compare both cylinders after 5 minutes.

If the intensity of purple color developed in test sample is less than that of the standard , the sample will pass the test or vice versa.
