Duryodhana and Bhanumati
In the Mahabharata, Duryodhana's wife is never named. Her mention in the Mahabharata is very rare. The Shanti Parva elaborates on Duryodhana's marriage, a significant event. King Chitrangada of Kalinga hosted a Svayamvara, and Duryodhana, accompanied by Karna, attended. Many rulers, including Shishupala, Jarasandha, Bhishmaka, Vakra, Kapotaroman, Nila, Rukmi, Sringa, Ashoka, Shatadhanvan, and others, gathered for the ceremony. The princess, described as beautiful, entered the arena with a garland in hand, accompanied by her nursemaid and bodyguards. After learning about the participants and their lineage, she chose to walk away from Duryodhana. However, Duryodhana, smitten by her, refused to accept her rejection and, with Karna's support, took her away on his chariot. He challenged other suitors to defeat him and Karna, and Karna emerged victorious against the pursuing kings, leaving them in awe of his prowess. Upon reaching Hastinapura, Duryodhana cited Bhishma's abduction of three princesses of Kashi for Vichitravirya as a precedent to justify his actions. Eventually, the princess consented to marry Duryodhana. While Bhanumati's name is not directly mentioned in the Mahabharata, her identity is revealed through folktales.
