Popping and slapping is a technique that can be used a lot in funk playing but it can also be used to spice up other styles of music that you might run into. Basically I'd like to think about using the thumb, which does the slapping, right above the end of the finger board and just getting like a thumb sound and you can practice that by playing each of the strings individually...and then back down. You can also practice playing scales just slapping the bass. You can also add popping. popping is a technique of pull up on the string vertically. So you wrap your finger underneath the string you want to pop pull away from the bass. This gets the popping kind of sound which I equate to the sound of a snare drum for a drummer. So we can think about this as our bass drum and our snare drum. And you can play basic grooves that you might play on a drum set, add them to the bass and they can be just in your repertoire of things you could possibly play.
