Banjo strings are numbered from bottom to top as you look at this video, so the first string is nearest to the ground and the fifth string is nearest the sky.

To make things more confusing we call the first string the 'Top string' even though it is nearest the ground and the fourth string is called the 'Bottom' string because it has the lowest sound.

In this video we are playing -

First string on the 2nd fret
Second string on the 1st fret
Third string on the 2nd fret
Fourth string on the 2nd fret
Fifth string is left open.
