Situated at a distance of 30 km from Angul town, Satkosia Tiger Reserve is a paradise for both animal lovers and nature seekers. With its dense green forests, silent hills and murmuring streams, Satkosia is the second largest forest landscape in Odisha. The mighty and beautiful Mahanadi River, the lifeline of Odisha, passes through it making the place exquisitely rich in biodiversity. The magnificence of the place can turn even casual visitors into lovers and worshipers of Nature. At Tikarpada – the major attraction of Satkosia - tourists get to enjoy boat rides on the Mahanadi and view the majestic gorge, towering mountains and frolicking migratory and local birds on the river banks along with Gharials and Muggers – two endangered crocodile species of Odisha - basking in the sun. Nature camps have been set up at different spots in Satkosia where tourists can have a luxurious stay and still be part of nature.

Established in 1976 as a wildlife sanctuary Satkosia has been formed from three erstwhile sanctuaries of Raigoda, Padmatola, and Mahanadi over an area of 795 sq km. It derives its name from ‘sat’ which means seven and ‘kosh’ which means two miles, thus denoting a total of 14 miles gorge of the beautiful Mahanadi river which has passed through the sanctuary dividing the area into a greater north half and lesser south half. Spreading across 530 sq km, the northern portion of the sanctuary comes under Satkosia Wildlife Division with headquarters at Angul district.
