In this video, we’re going to talk about lactose intolerance. Many have this problem and don’t even know they have it. So, what is lactose intolerance, and what should you do?

Lactose intolerance is a situation where you can’t break down lactose. Lactose is a form of sugar in many dairy products.

Some dairy products contain no lactose—always check to see if there’s a label that says “lactose-free” if you think you might be lactose intolerant.

The symptoms of lactose intolerance include:
• Gas
• Bloating
• Inflammation
• Pain
• Rumbling

These symptoms can happen right after you consume dairy, or they can happen several minutes to an hour later.

Some people with an allergy to milk or dairy can experience similar symptoms to lactose intolerance. However, these are two different things. A milk allergy is an immune reaction to the protein in dairy called casein.

Those with a dairy allergy may experience:
• Vomiting
• Hives
• Serious inflammation
• Wheezing

If you consume lactose-free products but still have a reaction to dairy, you may have an allergy instead of an intolerance to lactose. Talk to your doctor about testing for both of these situations.

What causes someone to become lactose intolerant? Lactose intolerance can be caused by:
1. Damage to your intestinal lining
2. Loss of enzymes to break down lactose
3. Loss of immune system
4. Quality of dairy products

The best remedies for lactose intolerance are:
• Probiotics (Bifidobacterium longum)
• Consume aged cheese, like cheddar and swiss
• Avoid processed cheese, milk, yogurt, and cottage cheese (all high in lactose)
