🔥 In this episode of Burbex, Brin takes a 14-hour journey through a landscape which is literally on fire to find the largest abandoned air base in Europe.

🛩️ Željava Air Base – Abandoned Yugoslav Megastructure on the EU Border
Right on the border between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Željava Air Base—also known as Objekat 505—was once one of the most secretive and advanced underground military airbases in Europe.

Built in 1968 by the Yugoslav People's Army, this Cold War relic could withstand a nuclear blast and housed fighter jets deep inside a mountain. But during the Yugoslav Wars, the retreating Serbian military destroyed the base between 1991 and 1992, using over 50 tonnes of explosives to prevent its use by enemy forces.

Since then, Željava has become a forbidden zone—abandoned, decaying, and dangerous. The area is still littered with landmines and unexploded ordnance, and parts of the underground complex are unstable. It's also an active smuggling route and illegal crossing point into the EU, with frequent police and border patrols in the area.

Despite the risks, it remains a haunting and legendary location for urban explorers, military historians, and Cold War enthusiasts.
