This is the first of the 80 short films I’ll be posting daily on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube with a director's commentary.

In this first film we are on Woldgate, the ancient Roman road through the East Yorkshire Wolds, which over a period of ten years David Hockney was to commemorate countless times. His mastery of drawing is matched by his gift for dipping into the memory banks for a perfect aphorism.

As I was following him drawing the trees, I wondered how much the Hockney line is something conscious or innate - or somewhere in between, like a signature which is at first consciously developed but then becomes automatic.
