8. Field Methods VI: The von Post Degree of Humification

The von Post degree of humification is among the most important parameters describing peat that can de determined in the field. This video presents the von Post squeeze test – the standard method for identifying the degree of humification in wet, freshly excavated peat. Then it goes on to explain how dry or strongly degraded peat can also be scored on the von Post scale.
This video series about peatlands and peatland soils was produced as part of a collaboration between project WIKIMoooS (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) and project MoorIS – A Peatland Information System for Lower Saxony (LBEG). These projects were financed by Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU) and the ERDF fund of the European Union, respectively.
The series consists of two informational videos on peatlands and their soils and eight tutorials that present methods for investigating peatland soils in the field. This is the sixth tutorial video.
