Host Keith Edward Cantú welcomes Marleen Thaler, postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Graz and the University of Vienna’s Research Centre “Religion and Transformation in Contemporary Society” for an exploration of experimental spirituality, spanning energy-healing laboratories to occult research.

Thaler discusses the modern history of kuṇḍalinī and how working with Prof. Karl Baier led her to investigate “serpent power.” She outlines three waves of kuṇḍalinī research: early Theosophical translations in the 1880s, an empirical surge in the 1920s, and a late-twentieth-century “heyday.” She distinguishes between early modern esotericism and occultism as a specifically nineteenth-century category linked to experimental spirituality and scientific discourse, and introduces her new volume, Subtle Energies, which examines how concepts of invisible forces have globalized across healing, politics, and the arts. Thaler also reveals her latest project, “Divine Devices,” on machines in alternative religions: vitality, electrophysiological tools for measuring chakras, and “imagined machines” found in UFO and extraterrestrial encounters.
