New South Wales Treasurer Dominic Perrottet has spoken to Sky News about the NSW state government push to allow international students to return to the state.

The New South Wales government is set to launch a bid with the Commonwealth to allow international students to return to the state.

The average student spends around $65,000 a year in NSW and the sector is worth $15 billion to the economy a year.

International students are New South Wales' biggest service export and the number one export after coal.

"I think this year, as 2021 rolls through, we need to make sure that we get as many students back as possible," Mr Perrottet told Sky News host Sharri Markson.

Mr Perrottet said the move would impact the state's university sector, as well as jobs and the economy.

He said," we've got to get the balance right now," and in doing so "look at innovative ways of doing things".
