If they hadn't been there, Vellore Christian Medical College wouldn't have existed.
Before the arrival of super-specialty hospitals, Vellore Medical College was the last resort for cases where ordinary hospitals in the region were giving up.There was a belief among the people that if patients reached there, they would be saved."When they said, 'Even after being taken to Vellore, there was no salvation,' the sentiment of having done everything possible was contained in that."It would be good to know how this medical college came into existence.
Some experiences in life make us realize what our life's purpose is.In some situations, the helplessness we experience later becomes an inspiration to do anything. Many great figures who have turned their weaknesses and vulnerabilities into strengths have secured their place in history. It was the helplessness she experienced one night in 1894 that inspired Ida Sophia Scudder, an American, to embark on a noble mission.
Ida Scudder, daughter of American missionary and doctor John Scudder, was born in 1870 in the village of Dindigul, Tamil Nadu.Although she went to America for school education, she returned to India at the age of twenty to assist her father.Generally, they were working in a society filled with superstitions and customs. In rural areas where medical services were not available at that time, the average lifespan of women was only 24 years. The main reason women did not receive medical treatment was the prevailing custom at that time that men should not treat women. There were no women who had studied medicine at that time. The terrifying condition in the villages of India was that women died during childbirth.
On a night in 1894, a man entered the house in the village of Dindivanam, where Ida and her father lived. The man had come to take Ida to help his wife, who was experiencing tumultuous labor pains.John Scudder said he could help, but he refused.Id, who had not studied medicine, expressed his helplessness. That very night, two more men arrived with the same request. But since Id had no medical experience, he couldn't help them. The next day, it was learned that the wives of the three people who had arrived the previous night had passed away.Id felt a great sense of disappointment and guilt. They decided to study medicine. After returning to America, she graduated with a medical degree from Cornell Medical College. At that time, Ida Scudder was one of the very few women obtaining a medical degree.
In 1900, Ida returned to India and started a clinic in the village of Vellore, Tamil Nadu. The capital was ten thousand rupees given by someone to do something in memory of his deceased wife. With this amount, it started as a clinic for women with only one bed.By 1902, it had grown into a hospital with 40 beds.Nursing was taught to girls from the rural areas. In 1918, a medical study center exclusively for girls was opened.Hearing about the service activities of Ida Scudder, Mahatma Gandhi visited the hospital in Vellore in 1928.Until 1945, the hospital operated only for women. In 1952, the 'Elizabeth Blackwell' award for the world's best female doctor was conferred upon Ida Scudder. In 1960, Ida Scudder passed away.
Ida Scudder's great mission has today expanded and transformed into CMC Vellore, the largest hospital in Asia.Today, Vellore Medical College employs around 3000 beds, 1656 doctors, 2646 nurses, and a total of 9066 people.Every year, millions of people come for treatment.175 medical-related courses are conducted here. The inspiration for the great mission of the saint Ida Scudder was the helplessness she experienced one night.Ida Scudder's life is a perfect example that those with willpower can overcome any adversity and move forward.
