When you add oil to the engine, it is stored in the oil pan and starts to circulate when you start the engine. When the level of oil in the pan is too high, the crankshaft comes into contact with the oil, forming a frothy substance that cannot lubricate the engine. The frothy substance also creates too much pressure in the engine.
