Canon R5C 12Bit 8K 50p/60p RAW Video Test (With RAW files to download)

It’s here, it’s here!! Finally got my Canon R5C. And I was lucky enough to take it over to Melbourne to do the video test. My first work trip after two years. First of all, the camera feels really good in hands. And I gotta say the 8K 50p/60p is just another level. Although when shooting 8K 60p. It does require external power. Otherwise the f stop, IS and Video AF will all be disabled. 

So some of you may think. Oh it is just another R5 with a build in fan. It’s kinda yes and no. Although the R5C shares the same sensor as the R5. The over all image will look similar. But there are so much more. First, we have 8K 60p. The original R5 only shoots 8K upto 30p. So I think Canon wanted to push the R5C even more to deserve a C logo. Second, we now have the better video codec than before. The R5 was able to shoot 8K RAW and normal 4K MP4 files. But the RAW was so hard to work with. And for the 4K MP4 file, my computer couldn’t even playback properly. But the R5C is now using the CinemaRAW light for 8K and 5.9K crop. And for the normal 4K video. You can choose the XF-AVC codec. And I love those codecs. My 2018 iMac Pro was able to edit it no problem. Third, we have the full cinema menu as well as Timecode, Waveforms, and histogram. And the best thing is, we no longer have that 30min recording limit. Fourth, even though the body design is almost like a R5 with a fan sticks out from the back. But we also do have the new Multi-Function hotshoe just like the Canon R3. And tally light. So it makes the camera truely a cinema camera.  

Things that I love about this camera
Since the camera has a build in fan. So almost all the modes default as HQ mode. (Except 4K 120p) Meaning it’s 8K oversampling no matter what. 

Things I don’t like about this camera
One thing I realize, when the camera is in video mode. There isn’t a dial that you could control the shutter Speed, shutter angle. Just like the C200 and C70. But those cameras have build in NDs. So I hope Canon can fix that in firmware update
