A Brief History of Technics Direct Drive Turntables: 1970-2024

At the Technics facility in Kyoto, Japan, the company has on display a selection of their iconic direct drive turntables, spanning over half a century. Join us to check out the SP-10, released in 1970, all the way up to the brand’s collaboration with Automobili Lamborghini for a very special edition SL-1200 in Lamborghini-inspired colors.

Please note that this is not a comprehensive list of Technics direct drive turntables, by far! In this display, the company is featuring the SL-1200 model and many if its incarnations as these were the ones that established Technics as the brand to be reckoned with in Japanese turntables. Models like the SL-1100, SL-1300, SL-1500, SL-1510 (and more) also feature Technics direct drive technology but are not included in this display (or video). The SP-10 was included as it was the first of its kind.
