Dr. Richard Alley has been teaching and researching geosciences with the Penn State College of Earth and Mineral Sciences since 1988.

Throughout his decades of scholarship, Dr. Alley has mentored hundreds of students and made discoveries that have shaped Earth science and climate policy worldwide.

Last month, he was awarded the National Medal of Science at a White House ceremony, the nation’s highest honor for achievement and leadership in science and technology.

We asked him to reflect on his decades of service to Penn State and the scientific community:

"The dangers of climate change, I spend a lot of time communicating on them. It can be really depressing. But in solving them, we are gonna build a better energy system that's gonna give more energy, cheaper to more people around the entire world. And we can do it cleanly, and we can do it in a way that gives people the power to solve the other problems."
