South Korea and the U.S kick off the second phase of their Ulchi Freedom Shield joint exercise.
It involves all military branches including the U.S. space force to ramp up readiness against advancing North Korean threats.
Lee Eun-jin reports.
South Korea and the United States commenced the second phase of their Ulchi Freedom Shield combined exercise on Monday.
The annual exercise aims to strengthen joint preparedness in any possible emergency situation, including provocations by North Korea, in the face of the North's advancing military and cyber threats.
The first phase, which started on August 21, included a government drill to check military ability to respond to an all-out war,
and the second phase, which starts today and runs for four days until Thursday, will involve the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps of both South Korea and the U.S.
Additionally, the newest command founded last year, the U.S. Space Forces Korea, will provide space planning, space expertise, and space command and control functions to the commander of the U.S. Forces Korea, and perform regional missile alerts, as well as GPS and satellite communication missions.
Pundits say that it's highly likely that the U.S. will also deploy strategic assets such as B-1B strategic bombers during this exercise.
All United Nations Command Member States are scheduled to participate in different capacities, with 10 members providing additional exercises.
Those members are Australia, Canada, France, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, New Zealand, the Philippines, Thailand, and the U.S.
Additionally, the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission, which includes Sweden and Switzerland, will observe and monitor the exercise.
