t all isn’t only glory numbers and celebrations when it comes to testing on the Mainline Hub Dyno at the FuelTech USA facility. The tool is useful to fix problems before hitting the drag strip or motorsport racecourse, saving time and money. Dyno and technical support is available to all FuelTech customers and Chris Vickers came to Ball Ground, Georgia to learn about his FuelTech engine management system and work through issues with his supercharged racecar. FuelTech’s unmatched technical support group, led by Cameron Lohrmann, worked with Vickers to make the day go smoothly and identify changes needed to get his Mustang on the fast track.
Vickers built a sporty supercharged combination for his SN95 Mustang and plans to compete in the SoCo 275 drag radial category at his local tracks and in the popular Ultra Street category. The foundation is a small-block Ford that utilizes a Dart block, Trick Flow R cylinder heads, Holley Hi-Ram lower with a 417 Motorsports upper lid, and a ProCharger F-1C centrifugal supercharger. An FT600 ECU was selected and it offers a complete line-up of standard features including sequential injection and ignition, O2 Closed Loop, data logger, delay box, Boost Controller, Nitrous Controller, and so much more. These are also standard features in all PowerFT ECUs that include the FT550, FT550 LITE, and FT450. All ECUs also include a closed loop option for advanced and efficient fuel functions, aiding in engine safety.
The FT450, FT550, and FT600 ECU units house an LCD display and touchscreen on the actual unit, showing real-time data and allowing the user to make adjustments without a PC connection. Not only does the ECU display the real-time information from the assortment of sensors wired into the engine management system, all PowerFT ECUs can data log each sensor, which eliminates the need for an additional system to be built into the vehicle. In the case of the FT600, it is capable of recording up to 256 channels of data if configured properly. Another useful option is the GearController that is available in the FT600 and FT550 ECUs.
Vickers’ Mustang runs a set of 550 lb/hr fuel injectors, which sit in the Holley intake, and they are controlled through a Peak and Hold 8A/2A box. Applications that run eight injectors utilize two Peak and Hold 8A/2A boxes while combinations that run 16 injectors will need four boxes. FuelTech recently unveiled its latest injector driver box dubbed the Peak and Hold PRO. This new unit is programmable, allowing the user to adjust the amperage as per the fuel injector requirements as well as run diagnostics and set fail-safe thresholds to prevent faulty injectors from causing catastrophic engine failure. The new Peak and Hold PRO is a dual-channel box, meaning it can run up to eight fuel injectors and two boxes are needed to run up to 16 injectors.
The supercharged small-block Ford’s air/fuel ratio is carefully monitored by a WB-O2 Nano, which utilizes a Bosch LSU 4.2 sensor. The unit is connected to the PowerFT engine management system through a CAN connection and a reasonably sized digital readout is compact enough to mount in an assortment of areas such as under the hood or inside the cockpit for the driver to reference at a moment’s notice.
Vickers might not have produced insane numbers at the hubs, however the car did roll into the shop unable to fire up and faced an assortment of issues that needed to be corrected. In the end, a loose torque converter hampered the vehicle’s output but Vickers has a game plan to select the right converter before hitting the drag strip.
From incredible technical support to professional motorsport operations, there is a reason you’re seeing #FuelTechEverywhere
