A quick overview and guide to mods and tuning the awesome Honda S2000 AP1 and AP2.
Fitted with a superb high revving F20 or F22 engine, these engines are arguably among the best production engines around in terms of design and efficiency.
But we often get asked about upgrades and mods for the Honda S2000 and to supplement our tuning guide on our main site we have produced this video guide to the S2000.
The Honda S2000 is an iconic sports car that has captivated enthusiasts worldwide since its debut in 1999. Renowned for its high-revving F20C or F22C engine, exhilarating handling, and razor-sharp precision, the S2000 has earned its place among the most celebrated sports cars of all time.
While the S2000 is already a formidable performer in its stock form, there's always room for improvement. For those seeking to unleash the full potential of their S2000, a variety of modifications and tuning options are available to enhance its performance, handling, and overall driving experience.
Handling Mods
Brakes: Upgrading the brakes is a crucial step in enhancing the S2000's stopping power and overall performance.
Performance brake pads and rotors provide superior bite, fade resistance, and modulation, ensuring confident braking under demanding conditions.
Suspension: The S2000's double-wishbone suspension system is already well-regarded for its agility and responsiveness.
However, further refinement can be achieved through aftermarket suspension components. Upgraded coilover systems offer adjustable damping rates, allowing fine-tuning to match driving styles and road conditions.
Sway Bars: Sway bars play a critical role in reducing body roll and improving handling dynamics. Upgraded sway bars, particularly a larger front sway bar, can further enhance the S2000's cornering capabilities.
Power Mods
ECU Tuning: The S2000's electronic control unit (ECU) governs various engine parameters, including fuel mixture, ignition timing, and boost control. ECU tuning involves reflashing the ECU with optimized parameters, unlocking additional power and improving overall engine performance.
Intake and Exhaust Upgrades: Enhancing airflow into and out of the engine can significantly boost power output. Upgraded air filters and exhaust systems allow the engine to breathe more freely, resulting in improved throttle response and increased power. But does this mod work effectively on the S2000?
Head Flowing and Porting: For those seeking maximum power gains, head flowing and porting involve modifying the intake and exhaust ports of the cylinder head.
This process improves airflow efficiency, leading to increased power output, particularly at higher RPMs although it is hard to improve the original Honda head design.
Additional Considerations
Weight Reduction: Reducing unsprung weight, such as lightweight wheels and tires, can improve handling and suspension responsiveness.
Additionally, removing unnecessary interior components can further reduce overall weight.
Drivetrain Upgrades: Upgraded clutches and flywheels can handle the increased power and torque from performance modifications, ensuring smooth and reliable power delivery.
Tire Selection: Choosing high-performance tires specifically designed for track or spirited driving can significantly enhance grip, handling, and overall performance.
We look at handling mods from brakes, suspension and other tweaks and then look at power mods from ECU mods and upgrades, exhaust and intake mods and head flowing and porting.
