Model:Samples Lo-Fi Loops

Описание к видео Model:Samples Lo-Fi Loops

This video is an introduction to using the Elektron Model:Samples delay as a looper. I go over some of the problems with this sort of method and some solutions as well. Lo-fi? Well, maybe more in terms of sound degeneration than in terms of the genre - but this is certainly a path towards getting MORE VOICES to make lo-fi beats on the Model:Samples - and all kinds of other music as well! I'm putting some links down at the bottom for more information about looping and beatmaking in general. I wouldn't have really thought to make this video without some of the great videos from Enrique Martinez about resampling on the Elektron Digitakt and the SP404, as well as his use of the SP404 delay as a looper at Moogfest 2019.

TIMELINE

00:00 This is the Zoots kalimba/looper from BrandNewNoise. Fun to play around with!

00:35 In the Intro I go over the voice/track structure of the Model:Samples. Sample-Locking is great, but it doesn't add more voices. I look to the Digitakt for a little inspiration.

07:00 "Row, Row, Row, Your Boat" - a classic round song makes sense for talking about delay-based looping. (I'm a little steamed because I forgot to add another round of it +1 octave, but it still gets the point across.)

09:15 BE CAREFUL USING DELAY FEEDBACK SETTINGS OVER 100 ON THE MODEL:SAMPLES, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE DELAY TIME IS LOW! Seriously, it can grow and get out of control a lot faster than you might expect. Protect your ears and your gears.

12:30 Showing how to crossfade two tracks on the Model:Samples using the delay. Running 8 voices during the fade (3 melody samples, 5 tracks in the beats part) ...

13:45 The issues with delay looping on the Model:Samples - 1) The max loop time is 1 bar (16 trigs). Fine, just lower the tempo to 30bpm for an 8 second loop. 2) No reverb on the delay repeats (that's the architecture). Fine, keep reverb on your top (live) layer or try using samples that already have reverb. 3) Hi-hats die out quickly, presumably due to filtering within the delay loop. Fine, put them on one track in the top layer.

18:40 Demo setup. I launch the drums in one pattern, capture it in the delay, move to another pattern (in sync) and add in hi-hats. I went with a 32 trig hat pattern, but you could do more variation, more sample locking, and conditional trigs. This leaves room for 5 samples/chops to play over the drum pattern. Running 9 voices on this setup (3 drums in delay, 5 samples, 1 hat)...

20:30 Sample-Lock Gating (maybe there is another term for this, but I figured I should call it something)

21:10 Demo of the method. Not very happy with it originally, but after I kept listening to it I started to like it more. I started to hear a melody that seemed to move across the samples.

22:15 Outro. Thanks for watching!

23:45 Ambient piece. I re-shot this because I originally forgot to do any time glitches, lol dummy. This was done with sounds from the Elektron Digitone (presets actually) that I recorded onto a cassette tape (using a $4 Realistic tape recorder from the thrift store - score!) and then back to digital. The Model:Samples setup is somewhat different than in the earlier demo. I use two patterns, 12 different samples, but no sequencer. I had the delay feedback set to 65 in both patterns so the delay buffer doesn't get too crowded. A couple of the tracks/sounds have no delay send whatsoever. I do change the delay time at a couple of points, but the biggest glitch come from switching patterns (one was set at 45 bpm and the other was set at 60 bpm).
