Presentation delivered by Lauren Regan (University of Surrey) at the Pedagogic Value of Video for Learning & Lecture Recording (CIE VideoLearn2020) event. The one-day event took place on 9th January 2020 at the University of Liverpool and was hosted by the University's Centre for Innovation in Education.

The purpose of the day was to discuss the pedagogic value of lecture recording and video for learning, as well as begin to address some of the concerns staff may have around these areas.

Presentation Summary

In July 2018, in response to student demand for more audio/visual content within modules, the TEL department, University of Surrey, consulted with members of staff and designed the Captured Content Policy 2018. This policy encouraged the use of video to help enhance learning, beyond lecture capture. Part of the work that is now carried out by TEL is to support staff in implementing the policy to ensure access to captured content for all students on all modules. One of the main aims of the policy was to encourage staff to consult with students to establish the best type of captured content they could provide that would enhance teaching and learning. This case study will outline how the policy has encouraged academic staff to consider the use of video in learning beyond lecture capture and how staff have made use of videos for flipped learning and to enhance student’s understanding. It will also explore how students perceive the use of video in their modules and the importance of ensuring that both students and staff have the same understanding of how they perceive video as a measure of teaching excellence and the part it plays in education.
