A comparison of Unity hexagonal tilemap system and my own custom shader. Even if the default solution has pretty neat features, it has some small issues that were inconvenient for me, so I decided to go with my own solution. More features (such as animations or texture arrays) can be added in the future.

Some nodes in my custom shader were made by me in .hlsl. I may reveal it in the future.
