Kai Strauss - In My Prime
Kai Strauss has been a well-known name among European Blues lovers since the early nineties. Now, at the age of 50, the guitar player and singer releases his sixth album on the Dutch CRS label – aptly titled “In My Prime”. Strauss is an experienced musician with a signature style, grown up from the respect he has for his idols. He knows all the pioneers: Guitar Slim, Luther Tucker, all three Kings, Otis Rush and Magic Sam. You can’t pin him on anyone, and yet they all live through his playing. Today Kai himself is a well-respected figure among guitar fans worldwide. On “In My Prime”, a first-class band lights a fire of 70’s funky blues influences underneath Kai, and the album’s horn section built around US saxophone virtuoso Sax Gordon, shows another example of his international importance. New original songs like “Going To London” or “In My Prime” speak to his ability to walk traditional paths in a creative manner. Strauss understands that the music should always tell a story. Heartfelt vocals and plenty of tasteful guitar playing with punches of feelings and emotions shine through these 11 tracks about personal experiences (“Guest In The House Of The Blues”), current topics (“World Crisis Blues”) and also the dark side of life (“Put That Bottle Down”). Maybe he is, as he says, in his prime with this album. But “In My Prime” is definitely not just a repetition of his previous work, but evidence of his musical and personal growth that will ensure him as a meaningful and exciting blues artist for years to come.

Kai Strauss ist seit Anfang der neunziger Jahre ein bekannter Name unter europäischen Bluesliebhabern. Jetzt, im Alter von 50 Jahren, veröffentlicht der Gitarrist und Sänger sein sechstes Album auf dem niederländischen Label CRS – treffend betitelt mit „In My Prime“. Strauss ist ein gereifter Musiker mit eigener Handschrift, erwachsen aus dem Respekt zu seinen Vorbildern. Er kennt sie, die Pioniere: Guitar Slim, Luther Tucker, alle Three Kings, Otis Rush und Magic Sam. Auf keinen kann man ihn festnageln, und doch bleiben sie durch ihn lebendig. Heute ist Kai selbst eine angesehene Persönlichkeit unter Gitarrenfans weltweit. Auf „In My Prime“ entfacht eine erstklassige Band unter ihm ein Feuer aus funky 70er-Jahre-Blues-Einflüssen, und dass er eine Horn Section um den US-Saxofonisten Sax Gordon am Start hat, zeigt einmal mehr seine internationale Bedeutung. Eigene Songs wie „Going To London“ oder „In My Prime“ attestieren ihm das Handwerkszeug, traditionelle Wege kreativ zu beschreiten. Strauss versteht, dass Musik immer eine Geschichte erzählen sollte. Geradliniger, authentischer Gesang und stilsicheres, ausdrucksstarkes Gitarrenspiel ziehen sich durch 11 Tracks über die Liebe (zur Musik – „Guest In The House Of The Blues“), aktuelle Themen („World Crisis Blues“) oder beleuchten die Schattenseiten des Lebens wie in „Put That Bottle Down“. Vielleicht ist er, wie er sagt, mit diesem Album in seiner Blütezeit. Mit Sicherheit ist „In My Prime“ aber nicht nur eine Fortsetzung seiner bis dato erschienenen Alben, sondern lässt eine musikalische und persönliche Weiterentwicklung erkennen, die Strauss auch in Zukunft als Bluesmusiker spannend und bedeutsam bleiben lässt.
