Sunisa “Suni” Lee is an American gymnast and Olympic champion. Inspired by videos of Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson, she started gymnastics at the age of six. Her father built her a balance beam out of a mattress, and when she practised backflips in the garden, her parents realized that she needed professional training.
Lee won Olympic gold in the all-around and bronze on uneven bars in 2020 and bronze again in both disciplines in 2024. At the 2019 World Championships, she won silver on floor and bronze on uneven bars. She was part of the “Golden Girls” who won Olympic team gold in 2024, as well as the teams that won world championship gold in 2019 and Olympic silver in 2020. She is also a two-time US uneven bars champion.
Lee is the first Hmong-American Olympian and the first woman of Asian-American descent to win the Olympic all-around title.
