It is easy to chase rendering and shading, but there is a lot of power in simple flat line and color work. In this study session, I flip through some of the art books that always bring me back to the elegance of flatness and remind me that the real keys to making images work are design, composition, and storytelling, not rendering.

We look at work from Tatsuya Yoshikawa (Breath of Fire), Akiman/Akira Yasuda (Turn A Gundam), Krassinsky (Franco-Belgian comics), and Moebius (Jean Giraud) to understand why you probably do not need anything else beyond great line and color.
