Eddie Van Halen's brother finally breaks his silence over his death

After hip replacement surgery in 1999 to address a persistent joint issue, Eddie was diagnosed with mouth cancer in 2000, which required part of his tongue to be removed. He later faced a struggle with throat cancer and reportedly underwent radiation treatments in Germany. Many believe his prolonged smoking contributed significantly to his battle with cancer.

In his book Brothers, Alex disclosed that the drugs and alcohol Eddie used to cope with his discomfort exacerbated the throat cancer that ultimately claimed his life. "Having all that talent was the biggest curse he could ever bear," Alex said, acknowledging Eddie’s extraordinary guitar skills, though he ultimately paid for them with his health and life.
