“Expectations” is a song from the perspective of a girl who’s finished being hurt. She’s put up so many walls to the point where she won’t let anyone in. It starts off as a recollection of Riehm’s, “A pretty girl with a lit cigarette and a Led Zeppelin t-shirt/Told me.” After the first line, the entire song is either a quotation or a paraphrase of hers. With lines like, “Don’t tell me that you love me when you just gonna run out of this bed/In the morning,” the listener starts to realize how she doesn’t expect anything more than the physical from her encounter. Lines like these are spread about the song to indicate how she won’t let anyone prove her wrong: She’s essentially saying, “I’ve been hurt in the past, and I won’t let anyone do it again.” The chorus leads off with the title of the song, “Baby, I’ve got expectations/That every guy just wants me naked/And every night we’ll end up faking love.” She clarifies in the back half of the chorus, “And baby, I’ve made adaptations/From thinking love should come with patience/To knowing love’s just something boys made up.” The chorus emphasizes how her past experience has tainted her view of love, morphing it into something that’s simply a sham, if not impossible.
LYRICS:
A pretty girl with a lit cigarette and a Led Zep t-shirt
Told me
"Don't read in this a one-night stand
Don't make no plans just hold me
Don't tell me that you love me when you just gonna run out of this bed in the morning
'Cause I don't see us sippin' coffee, no
I just see us taking off our clothes"
She said, "I'm used to this by now
See, I've been getting used to being let down
[Chorus]
And, baby, I've got expectations
That every guy just wants me naked
And every night we'll end up faking love
And, baby, I've made adaptations
From thinking love should come with patience
To knowing love's just something boy's made up"
x2
[Verse 2]
And she said
"I'm pretty sure that you're just my type with your hat flipped backwards
Aw, yeah
Bet you like how I wear this dress, but it's better on my bedroom floor
So save your time and your lines cause we both know where this ends up
In the morning
'Cause I don't see you growing on me, no
I just see us taking off our clothes
[Chorus]
And, baby, I've got expectations
That every guy just wants me naked
And every night we'll end up faking love
And, baby, I've made adaptations
From thinking love should come with patience
To knowing love's just something boy's made up
Oh, baby, I've got expectations"
x2
